GERRIT/GEORGE GREVELING
Gerrit/George Greveling was born in June 1895 in Holland to Klaas Nicholas Greveling (1871-1959) & Aaltje Ritman (1862-1904). George had fivesiblings, Sipke/Sidney (Sippie) (1896-1982), Hendrik (1900-1952), Jan/John (1901-1978), Johan (1903-1979) and Aaltjen Hermina (1896-1987). Following his mother’s death on 12 April 1904, his father brought the family to England and then New Bruswick sailing on SS ‘Corinthian’ departing Liverpool on 24 November and arriving in St John on 6 December. His father married Lutske Westra (b 1882) on 22 December 1904 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Klass & Lutske had seven children, Pieter/Peter (b 1906), Albert (b 1906), Reiner (1907-1976), Dirk/Richard (1908-1976), Frederick (1910-1973), Bertha (b 1913) and Margaret (b 1918).
The Greveling family travelled to New Westminster, British Columbia around 1911. George initially found work as an apprentice printer but subsequently worked as a locomotive engineer. At the time of the 1921 census the family were living in Burnaby, New Westminster. Although George was included on the census record his name was crossed out and none of his details are recorded. This might suggest that he was normally resident with his family, but absent on the day that the census was taken. As he was a locomotive engineer his job could have taken him across the country and this may explain his signature on the quilt.
George married Ida Rebecca Hughes on 24 June 1925 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ida was born on 7 March 1905 in Parry Sound, Ontario to John Alexander Hughes (1883-1973) and Jessie McConnell (1886-1964). Ida had five brothers, Robert Ezra Alexander (1906-1957), John William (1910-1945), James Melvin (1911-1992), George (b 1918) and Lyle (b 1920) and three sisters, Marion Myrtle (b 1908), Dorothy Irene (1912-1927) and Ellen Ruth (1916-2008). Ida had previously married John Lawrence Guinn (1890-1924) and had one son from this union, Laurence E Guinn (b 1920).
George & Ida lived at 3750 Patterson Broadway, New Westminster, British Columbia from 1925-1938. They subsequently moved to 2634 West 14th St, Vancouver. Ida died on 14 February 1961 in Vancouver. George later moved to Apartment 3, 219 High St, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He died in Moose Jaw on 25 February 1964.
