CATHERINE ELIZABETH (KATE) PICKARD née MARQUIS

Catherine Elizabeth (Kate) Marquis was born on 16 May 1864 in Pickering, Durham, Ontario to John Marquis (b 1837) and Mary Ann Phipps (1840-1886). Her siblings were: John Wesley (1862-1938), Mary Ann (b 1866), Thomas F (b 1867), William Brown (b 1869), Janet A (b 1871) and Bertha D (b 1875). In 1881 the Marquis family was living in Pickering and in 1881 they were in Goderich, Huron, Ontario.

Kate married John Oliver Pickard on 7 February 1883 in Goderich Township. John was born on 26 September 1860 in Galt, Waterloo, Ontario to William Pickard (b 1826) and Ann Walter Johns (1834-1919). His siblings were: William Edward (b 1858), Mary Elizabeth (1863-1950), Thomas Walter (b 1865), Oscar Sidney (b 1870), James Orlando (b 1872), Ann Grace (b 1875) and Richard Franklin (1878-1881). In 1871 John's family was living in Galt and John, Kate and family continued to live there after their marriage.

According to John’s obituary which was sited on FindaGrave, John worked as a cattle buyer in Galt until 1915 when he moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. John O appears in the Henderson Directory for Saskatoon from 1912; Mrs J O and Mabel Pickard first appeared on the roll for 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1914, so it appears that they may actually have been in Saskatoon earlier than 1915. In 1916 the Pickard family was living on 36-5-W3 in Cory which is very close to Saskatoon. In 1918 they were living at 1702 8th St near Preston in Saskatoon and John was working as a stable foreman for T Eaton Company. John and Kate had the following children: John Franklin (Frank) (b 1884), Wesley Brown (1886-1969), Mabel Annetta (1893-1921) and a baby that did not survive that was born in 1896. Kate died in Winnipeg on 12 May 1948 and John on 23 July 1953. Both were buried in Elmwood Cemetery in that city.
