JAMES MORLEY PASCOE and ELLA PASCOE née McDONALD
James Morley Pascoe was born on 1 January 1871 in Oakwood, Victoria, Ontario to Lewis Trudgeon Pascoe (1837-1912) and Elizabeth Bowes (1848-1904). His siblings were: George Russell (1869-1928), William Thomas (b 1870), Martha Lillian Sarah Jane Gertrude (b 1873), Elizabeth Alberta May (b 1877) and Lewis (b 1885). James was raised in Mariposa, Victoria, Ontario. He was lodging with the Samuel Glassford family in Cannington, Ontario in 1891 and working as a dry goods clerk.
James married Ella McDonald on 1 June 1904 in Coboconk, Victoria, Ontario. Ella was born on 23 December 1871 in Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario to Thomas H McDonald (b 1841) and Eliza Bolton (b 1845). Her siblings were: Vining McDonald (b 1867), William (b 1869), Ida (b 1870), Herbert (b 1874), Edward (b 1877), Ethel (b 1879), Lottie (b 1881), Blanche (b 1882) and Gertrude (b 1887). In 1901 the McDonald family was living in Fenelon, Victoria, Ontario.
In 1911 James was living at 304 4th Ave, Saskatoon. He was listed in the Saskatoon Henderson Directory at 712 6th Ave N in 1913 and was at the same address in 1916. In 1911 James was a lodger and Ella was not listed. Both James and Ella first appeared on the roll for 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1912. They were removed from the roll in 1917. In 1916, James was a lodger and an Ella Smith was listed directly under him in the census record. Both were listed as married and Ella Smith had a birth place and age that were similar to those of James' wife, so there is some speculation that her surname was incorrectly recorded. Over the years in Saskatoon, James worked as a bookkeeper, accountant and salesman for Donald H Bain Co., Wholesale grocers. The last Henderson Directory listing was 1916. In 1921 James, Ella and Ella's niece, 6 year old, Joyce Nichols (her sister Vining's granddaughter) were living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Both Ella and James were still alive in 1949 as there was a boarder crossing record to Buffalo, New York generated that year. Their residence was not given.
It was noted that James brother, William, farmed near Warman, Saskatchewan from at least 1916 to 1921 so even if James and Ella moved away in 1917, they may well have come back to visit William and may have had occasion to sign the quilt at that time. Warman is about 25 km from Saskatoon. No other candidates could be found for these signatures and they were placed close to each other on the quilt suggesting that James and Ella were related.
