PARR FAMILY

Edward E Parr was born on 28 August 1861 in Haydock near St Helens, Lancashire, England to William Parr (1825) and Ann (b 1826). His siblings were: John (b 1852), William (b 1856), George (b 1865) and James (b 1868). He was raised in Lancashire and married Edith Ellen Sumner in the second quarter of 1884 in Wigan, Lancashire. Edith was born in February 1861 in Wigan to Jonathon Sumner (b 1831) and Nancy (b 1836). Her siblings were: Nancy (b 1863), William (b 1866), Elizabeth A (b 1869), Annie J (b 1871), Emma (b 1874) and Ernest J (b 1879).

Edith and Edward had nine children: Edith Dun (b 1886), Ernest (1887-1925), Harold Walton (b 1887), Mabel (b 1890), Lilian (1895-1944), Emma Sumner (1896-1950), Edward (Ted) (1899-1950), Wilfred Lawson (b 1901) and Rosa (b 1906). After their marriage, Edward and Edith continued to live in Lancashire and all of their children were born there. On 25 April 1909 they and their six youngest children boarded SS ‘Empress of Ireland' and sailed from Liverpool, England to Quebec City, Quebec, landing on 1 May 1909. They gave their final destination as Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where Edward planned to be a grocer. According to Edward's obituary, he and his family arrived in Saskatoon on 5 May 1909. At this time, only the eldest daughter, Edith, remained in England.

Ernest and Harold had already immigrated to Canada in 1906 and 1903, respectively. Harold was born in September of 1887 in Platt Bridge, Lancashire. At the time of his marriage to Almina (Mina) Evoy on 28 June 1911 in Carleton, Ontario, he was living in Tessier, Saskatchewan. Mina was born on 15 June 1884 in Simcoe, Ontario to William Lorne Evoy (1853-1912) and Lauretta Johnston (1858-1947). Her siblings were: Charles Freeman (1880-1948), Lena May (1882-1912), William Lorne (1886-1970), George (1888-1974) and John Herbert (b 1890).

From 1916 to 1921 Mina and Harold lived at 216 10th St E in Saskatoon. In 1918, Harold was working as a salesman and window trimmer for Dunn's Ltd. They had four children: H Elburn (1913-1988), Gordon Herbert (1919-1988) Stewart Evoy (1923-2009) and a daughter. Mina died on 25 September 1970 and Harold not long after on 6 November 1970. Both were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Emma was born on 1 September 1896 in Wigan, Lancashire. She married George Medley Tupper Hazen around 1927. George was born on 8 July 1900 in Montreal, Quebec. George and Emma had three sons. George died on 7 September 1969 and Emma on 18 February 1980, both in Saskatoon. They were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Ernest was born in March 1887 in Abram, Lancashire. He married Buddie Elizabeth in about 1912 and they had one daughter, Verna Marie (1913-2009). They lived at 439 4th Ave North, Saskatoon in 1916 and in Camrose, Alberta in 1921. Ernest died in Saskatoon on 6 October 1925 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Edward (Ted) Jr was born in July 1899 in Wigan, Lancashire. He operated a grocery store in Saskatoon with his father and continued to operate it after his father's death. He died in Saskatoon on 8 August 1950 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. It is presumed that he did not marry as his obituary just mentioned brothers and sisters. Most members of the Parr family joined 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1909. Harold joined in 1912 and Ernest in 1914. In his obituary, it was mentioned that Edward Sr was a long time member of 3rd Ave church.

The EE Parr signature may have been added by any one of several people. The roll for 3rd Ave Methodist Church first listed Edward E Parr and Mrs EE Parr in 1909 which is the same year that the Parr family arrived in Saskatoon. Edward Parr Jr was only 10 years old and so did not have a wife. This entry must have referred to Edward Parr Sr. A few trees listed Edward Sr as Edward Powell Parr, but we were unable to verify that middle name from any other source and it may be incorrect. It is likely that the Edward Parr & Edith E Parr signatures are for Edward and his wife as they are adjacent to each other on the same quilt block. It is possible that Edward Sr or Edith Ellen may have signed the quilt twice. The middle initials for Edward Jr and Ernest are not known. If either of them had the middle initial E, one of them may have been responsible for that signature. Also, the Edward Parr signature may have belonged to either Edward Parr Jr. or Sr.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Parr Tree.
