James Arnold Hagerman was born on 4 May 1879 in Ravenshoe, Ontario to James Leslie Hagerman (1850-1913) & Jemima G Moody Brown (1852-1911). James had four sisters, Flora Allison (b 1873), Louie Amelia May (b 1875), Jessie Jemima (1885-1898) & Ellen (Nellie) Augusta (1888-1963) and one brother Hugh Blain (1883-1884). James’ father was a storekeeper in 1891 but took up farming when he came west to Virden, Manitoba. In 1906 he had 11 horses, 7 milk cows, 19 beef cattle & 8 pigs. James worked on his father’s farm until 1908 when he moved to Unity, Saskatchewan to open a store and become a real estate broker.
James married Levanah (Leva) Quick on 17 October 1912 in Essex, Ontario. Leva was born on 16 February 1883 in Essex to Charles A Quick (b 1857) & Rosena Wigle (b 1857). Leva had three brothers, Drayton (1881-1935), Delbert (b 1886) & Stanley (b 1892) and one sister, Cora (b 1887). Leva’s father was a merchant and Leva a bookkeeper prior to her marriage. James & Leva had three children, Marion Winnifred (1915-1993), Charles Leslie (1916-2005) & Eleanor (1918-2006).
From 1908-1929, James was a store owner and real estate broker in Unity, Saskatchewan. In 1929 James and Leva moved to Saskatoon, where James was a manager for the Equitable Life Assurance Company, a position he held until his retirement around 1955. They lived at 315 Poplar Crescent, 708 Saskatchewan Crescent and 306 Cumberland Ave over the years. James died on 5 October 1966. Leva died on 30 October 1974. They are both buried in the Hagerman West Cemetery, Markham, Ontario.
James’ great grandfather was Nicholas Hagerman (1780-1838) who founded Hagermans Corners as a rural community in about 1803. This is now a built-up area in north-east Toronto but the Hagerman West Cemetery still exists alongside York Regional Road 3, north of the 14th Avenue intersection. See Wikipedia
