BEATRICE MATILDA HAHN

Beatrice Matilda Hahn was born on 9 April 1901 in Nottawa, Simcoe, Ontario to William James Hahn (1874-1921) & Mary Eleanor McKee (1877-1937). Beatrice had four sisters, Isla Mae (1899-1990), Verna Susanna (1907-1994), Annie Irene (1910-1942) & Elsie Josephine (1914-2001) and two brothers, Wilfred Henry (1903-1921) & Charles Forrin (1906-1956). Verna is missing from the 1921 census and Bernice Ella appears, but we assume they are actually the same person. William farmed and after 1901 brought the family west to Saskatchewan. The family lived in Saskatoon from 1919-1921 at 902 Spadina Crescent E and then 717 Ave E North.

Beatrice married Joseph Douthwaite on 28 April 1925 in Collingwood, Ontario. Joseph’s cousin, Ernest was a witness at the wedding. Joseph was born on 11 Apr 1899 in West Hartlepool, Durham, England to Joseph Douthwaite (1873-1909) & Laura Frankland (1876-1968). Joseph Jr had one sister, Mabel (1901-1907) and one brother, Walter (1904-1985). Joseph came to Canada aboard SS ‘Sicilian’ arriving in Quebec on 14 October 1910. He was one of a large group of children brought to Canada by the Dr Barnardo’s charity. Among the group was his cousin, Ernest Douthwaite. Joseph’s father had died in 1909 and Ernest’s mother had also died in 1909. The girls in the group were destined for domestic service and the boys to be farm labourers.

In 1916, when Joseph was seventeen he enlisted in 177th Overseas Battalion of CEF in Batteau, Newfoundland and Labrador. He gave his occupation as farmer and his next of kin as his mother still living in West Hartlepool, England.

Beatrice died on 28 October 1933 in Collingwood, Simcoe, Ontario. Joseph lived on in this area and he subsequently married Marion E Thompson (1904-1977). Joseph died on 12 February 1971.

This was a particularly difficult signature to decipher and it is only with hindsight that we are confident that it belongs to Beatrice Hahn.

Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Hahn Tree.
