FLORANNA MAY HAIR
Floranna May Hair was born on 1 May 1882 in Brooke Township, Lambton, Ontario to John Hair (1848-1927) & Ann Carter (1843-1919). May had three brothers, James Alexander (1872-1928), William Sherman (1873-1934) & Wilbert O (b 1889). May’s family grew up in Lambton, Ontario where her father was a farmer.
May appeared in the 1908 Henderson Directory for Saskatoon living in MacBeth Block 2nd Ave corner of 22nd St. She was working from home as a manicurist and masseuse. The following year she had moved to Willoughby Block 125 21st St and offered “Hair Goods, Hairdressing, Manicuring & Massaging”. Her sister, Elizabeth had joined her. Elizabeth worked as a bookkeeper for W H MacBeth, dry goods store. In 1911, May joined up with Hilda Sandberg to form Hair & Sandberg providing “Hair Goods, Hairdressing, Manicuring, Chiropody & Swedish Massaging” with premises at 227 2nd Ave. May lived at 114 4th Ave N. In 1912, May had moved again, to 411 3rd Ave N.
Elizabeth joined the 3rd Ave Methodist Church roll in 1906 and May in 1908. May’s name was removed in 1926.
In 1913, May had moved back to Willoughby-Sumner Block at Suite 207 and she was the sole proprietor of the May Hair business. 1914-16 saw her living & working from Drinkle Block No 2 106 3rd Ave S. 1917, she was living at 736 6th Ave N, but the business remained in Drinkle Block No 2. 1918-23 back in Drinkle Block No 2. In 1924 May was proprietor of Flanagan Beauty Parlors at 243 21st St E.1925 of Flanagan Hotel Beauty Parlors and lived at 404 20th St E.
It seems that May left Saskatoon after 1924. She was recorded on the electoral roll in Middlesex, Ontario as a hairdresser from 1935 onwards, sometimes her sister Rebecca was on the same electoral roll. May died on 19 April 1962 in Strathroy, Middlesex, Ontario.
