In 1871 the Merrifield family was living in St Clement, Cornwall.
Thomas married Mary Hannah Truscott on 20 September 1880 in Devonport, Devon, England. Mary was born on 15 August 1863 in Truro, Cornwall to Francis Truscott (b 1825) and Emma (b 1823). Her siblings were: Simon M (b 1852), Elizabeth A (b 1854), Emma J (b 1857) and Amelia Alice (b 1860). Mary was raised in Kenwyn, Cornwall, England. Thomas and Mary had five childen: Emma Jane (1881-1933), Mildred Annie (1887-1890), Thomas Truscott (1891-1942), Harold Francis (1894-1947) and Florence Hilda (1898-1987). The Merrifield family lived in Kenwyn until at least 1891. Mary died in Truro on 9 October 1899.
Thomas married Elizabeth Jane (Eliza) Osborne on 22 July 1900 in Truro, Cornwall. She was likely previously married to a Davis as that was her surname on the marriage record. She was born to William Osborne in St Tudy, Padstow, Cornwall, England on 31 July 1857 and died on 31 July 1940. In 1901 Thomas and family were living in Truro and in 1911 St Clement, Cornwall.
On 3 September 1911 Thomas boarded SS ‘Ascania' in Southampton, England and arrived in Quebec City, Quebec on 9 September 1911. His occupation was given as machinist. From 1912 to 1920, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Henderson Directories listed Thomas as a Compositor for the Daily Star living at the following locations: 614 McPherson (1912), 715 14th St (1913-1914), 612 McPherson (1914-1918) and 214 Sasktchewan Cres (1919-1920). In 1916 he was living in the Joseph R Baxter home where Alex McRobbie and Rose Sibley were also lodging. Joseph Baxter was the superintendent of the Daily Star and all of the lodgers also worked at the same newspaper and signed the quilt. We have found no records that show Eliza joining him in Canada.
Thomas returned to England on SS ‘Grampian’, arriving in Southampton on 20 September 1920. He died on 23 July 1940 in Truro, England.
