In 1891 and 1901 his family was living in Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Various census records give immigration dates that range from 1905 to 1910.
In 1915 and 1916 Alex lived at 612 McPherson with the Joseph Baxter family and was working as a Compositor for the ‘Daily Star’. The Baxters were Methodists, many of whom were also working at the ‘Daily Star’. There were also other boarders who were working for the paper. Several of the Baxters and some of the lodgers signed the quilt.
By 1918, the Saskatoon Henderson Directory has Alex listed at 612 Melrose and he was superintendent of the Saturday Press Publishing Co. In about 1920, Alex married Myrtle Elizabeth Barrett who was born in Ontario on 22 June 1891 to John Frederick Barrett and Annie Melinda Parker. Her family had moved to Saskatoon in about 1910.
Alex and Myrtle had two children, Myra Lorraine (b 1921) and Calvin Alexander (1930-1997). Myra married John Colin (Jack) Bailey (1916-1995). Jack was the son of Ethel Jane Bailey née Curry (1883-1971) who may also have signed the quilt. See Ethel Jane.
In 1921, Alex, who was working as a printer, Myrtle and Myra were living at 321 Ave C S with Myrtle’s brother, Lawrence Barrett and his wife, Annie. In 1939, Alex was plant superintendent for the Modern Press and they were living at 624 7th Ave.
