JOSEPHINE VICTORIA (TORY) MINERS
Josephine "Victoria" (Tory) Miners was born on 7 April 1888 in Klimsville, Huron, Ontario to William Miners (1844-1910) and Jane Andrew (1848-1906). Her siblings were: Rosa Jane (1872-1922), Annie Lauretta (1874-1876), William George (1876-1960), Frederick Andrew (1879-1960), Inez Mabel (1881-1924), Elizabeth Linda (Amy) (1833-1935), Charles Milton (1885-1957) and Clarence Ellis (b 1892).
Victoria was raised in Usborne, Perth, Ontario. She received a Bachelors Degree from Columbia Teachers College in New York and a Masters Degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbour. In 1911 she was living with her sister, Mabel, in Exeter, Huron, Ontario.
By 1916 Victoria was teaching at King George School in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and living at 720 McPherson. Her name first appeared on the membership roll for 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1915. 1921 found her living at 518 11th St E. Victoria became the principal of Haultain School in 1930; the first woman school principal in Saskatoon and continued in this post until her retirement in about 1951. After her retirement she worked for the Faculty of Education at the University of Saskatchewan for a few years. While holidaying in Ontario, Victoria was killed by a passing car near Cooksville on 30 July 1956. She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.
