JOHNSON MILLSAP and Mrs MILLSAP née HIGGS

NORMA, GLADYS, VERA and BEATRICE MILLSAP

Johnson Millsap was born on 9 May 1878 in Banda, Nottawasaga Township, Simcoe, Ontario to Solomon Millsap (1837-1920) and Mary Ann Coupland (1842-1913). His siblings were: John (b 1861), Elizabeth Ann (1863-1935), Francis Robertson (1864-1936), George Thomas (1866-1944), Hannah Elmina (Mina) (1868-1954), Joseph Edward (1870-1944), William (1871-1954), Mary Ellen (Nellie) (1873-1956), James Wesley (1874-1948), Alfred Solomon (1876-1959), Bertha Elizabeth Olive (1880-1954), Lawrence (1883-1907) and Jennie (1884-1977). Johnson was raised in Nottawasaga Township.

Johnson headed West in 1896 and boarded with the Theophilis Sharp family in Sintaluta, Saskatchewan in 1901. On 8 April 1905 he was issued a homestead grant on NE-20-11-17-2 in the RM of Scott which is near Lang, Saskatchewan. He married Rosie Helen (Rose Ellen) Higgs on 2 February 1909. She was born on 16 March 1880 in Scarborough, York, Ontario to Joseph Higgs (1848-1926) and Emily Gibbons (1847-1927). Her siblings were: William (b 1871), Laura Mary (b 1873), Christa Josephine (b 1877), Henrietta (1882-1911), Joseph (1883-1995), Violet Martha (b 1885) and Lilly May (1891-1979). Rose lived in Flos Township, Simcoe, Ontario with her family until at least 1901.

The Millsaps lived on the farm near Lang until 1911 when they moved to land near Sovereign, Saskatchewan. They had six children: Joseph who died at 1 year of age, Norma Myrtle (1910-2001), Gladys May (1911-2001), Doris Vera (1913-1989), Beatrice Ellen (b 1916) and Edith R who was born after 1921. In 1916 the Millsap family was living on 9-29-13-3 in St Andrews RM near Sovereign. From at least 1918 to 1921 they lived at least part time at 203 9th St in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. There was no mention of the few years around 1918 when the family lived in Saskatoon, but Johnson was listed as a farmer in Saskatoon Henderson Directories in those years. According to Rose and Johnson's obituaries, the Millsaps lived in Sovereign until 1946 when they moved to Saskatoon, living at 1722 Lorne Ave. Edith was a chemist for Quaker Oats Co and lived at 202 Main St in 1945. She later lived with her parents at 1722 Lorne Ave.

Johnson and Rose both died in Saskatoon, Johnson on 21 July 1954 and Rose on 19 March 1956. Both were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.

Norma was born on 22 January 1910 in Lang. She married Henry Franklin on 9 October 1934 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan. Henry was born on 2 March 1897 in South Plantagenet, Prescott, Ontario to Edward Franklin and Clara Nicholson. Henry and Norma died in Rosetown on 30 July 1962 and 2 March 2001, respectively.

Gladys was born on 7 March 1911 in Flos Township, Simcoe, Ontario and died in Saskatoon in 2001. She married Allan Finlay (1907-1933). In 1950, they lived at 202 Main St, Saskatoon where Allan was a teacher at Technical Institute. Both were buried in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Saskatoon.

Doris was born in 1913 in Saskatchewan. She was still listed as single and living at home in a 1940 voters list for Sovereign. She married William Henry Upton. In 1950, they were living at 1003 Ave O South, Saskatoon and William was a labourer for Coca Cola Co. He died on 9 November 1987 and Doris died on 19 December 1989. They were both buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Beatrice was born in Saskatchewan in 1916 and was also living at home in Sovereign in the 1940 voters list. She married Lloyd Gellatly. At the time of her parent's deaths she was married and living in Saskatoon. There are family histories written for the Millsap and Franklin families in a Sovereign Local History book "Mileposts to Memories" Millsaps are on page 177. Norma is mentioned on page 122 in the Franklin history.
