A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

ANN JANE (ANNA) HAMBLY née WALKER

Ann Jane (Anna) Walker was born on 18 October 1853 in Tecumseh, Essex, Ontario to Stewart Walker (1823-1913) and Frances England(1827-1894). Anna had four siblings, John (b 1857), Elizabeth (b 1859), Hannah (b 1868) and Martha Jane (b 1869). Anna grew up on the family farm in Whitchurch, York North, Ontario until her marriage to William Saunders Hambly (1847-1901) on 16 February 1881 in York County, Ontario.

William Hambly was born on 6 April 1871 to John Oscar Hambly (1809-1889) and Catherine O’Grady (1811-1874). William had six siblings, Thomas Allen (1837-1891), Lydia (1839-1903), Desire Eleanor (1841-1920), Ann (b 1849), Charles (1850-1875) and Mary M (b 1852).

William ran the store in Tecumseth, Simcoe County, Ontario at the time of his marriage. Anna and William had two sons, Edgar Charles Hambly (1885-1951) and Ross Walker Hambly (1889-1950). Both Edgar and Ross followed their father’s trade but branched out and ran businesses in Plato (Kindersley) and Fairview (Kindersley).

William died on 7 August 1901 in High Bluff, Portage la Prairie RM, Manitoba.

In 1911, Anna was living with her widowed father and her sister, Hannah in York County, Ontario. Following her father’s death in 1913, it seems possible that Anna came back to Kindersley in the Saskatoon area to live with one or other of her sons.

No further record of Anna has been found.

Ross Walker Hambly married Della May Miller (1897-1987) on 8 January 1917. Ross and Della had two daughters, June Della & Meryl Anna (1917-1998) and one son, Ross Stewart (Bud) (1921-1941). Ross enlisted on the RCAF during WWII and became a sergeant. He was killed in action when his Bristol Blenheim was brought down in the North Sea on 18 September 1941 with the loss of the entire crew.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Hambly Tree.
