EDWIN THOMAS SPENCE HARDY

Edwin Thomas Spence (Edward) Hardy was born on 9 Sep 1882 in Bradford, England to Alfred Spence Hardy (1843-1884) and Mary Esther Cayton (1859-1940). Edwin had one brother, Robert Spence (1880-1937) and five half-siblings from Mary’s second husband, Colin Benjamin Brodie (1861-1934), Benjamin Collins Edward (b 1886), John Albert (1888-1964), Catherine Mary Elizabeth Esther (b 1892), William Colman Henry (b 1894) & Eva Alfreda Elizabeth (b 1896).

The family sailed from Liverpool aboard SS ’Sarmatian’ on 1 March 1883 and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 11 March. Alfred Spence died nine months later on 21 January 1884 in Russell, Manitoba.

Edwin married Emma McMahon (1889-1974) around 1915. Emma was born on 19 July 1889 in Kinmount, Peterborough County, Ontario to William James McMahon (1850-1947) and Sphia Beamish (1859-1945). In 1916, they were living at 112 11th St, Saskatoon and Edwin/Edward was a clerk for Dunn’s Outfitters. Edwin always appears in the Henderson directories for Saskatoon as Edward.

Edwin and Emma had seven children, Clifford (1915-1915), Muriel Irene (1917-1987), William Stanley “Bud” (1918-2012), Bernice (b 1920) and Hugh, Mavis & Shirley. Edwin worked as a salesman for various mens outfitters in Saskatoon. He worked for Gillespie Big 22 at 212 2nd Ave from 1926 until his death on 22 January 1943 in Saskatoon.

Emma remained in Saskatoon and she died in May 1974.
