Another quilt?

ALEXANDER BREMNER HAY and LESLIE ALISON HAY

Alexander Bremner Hay was born on 4 March 1883 in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland to James Alexander Hay (1841-1926) and Sarah Whyte Morrison (1843-1935). Alex had nine siblings, George Morrison (1868-1927), Helen (1870-1872), Sarah (b 1871), Jessie Shearer (1874-1949), Charles Gordon (b 1876), William (b 1878), Margaret Anne (1881-1960), John (1888-1924).

Alexander immigrated to Canada aboard SS ‘Lake Manitoba’ arriving in Montreal, Quebec on 26 May 1905. He was living at 509 Sherbrooke St, Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1908 and married Mary Jane Buchan in Winnipeg on 2 July the following year. Mary was born in August 1888 in Monymusk, Aberdeenshire, Scotland to Francis Buchan (1861-1943) and Ann Reid Goodall (1856-1924).

Alexander and Mary came to Saskatoon in 1910 and lived at 10th St. Alexander worked as a building contractor. Alexander’s brother William lived with them at 119 10th St in 1911-1914. Alexander’s brother John Mackie and John’s wife Margaret Ann (Maggie) Duncan also lived with them in 1911-1913.

Alexander and Mary had four daughters, Lillian (1911-1999), Frances A (b 1912), Leslie Alison (1917-1918) and Isobel (1919-1999).

Leslie died on 12 July 1918; we surmise that Leslie Alison’s name was put on the quilt as a memorial after her death.

Leslie’s uncle, John Mackie died on 27 August 1924 and according to the Woodlawn Cemetery records he was buried beside Leslie. When his wife, Margaret died on 31 March 1974, she was buried alongside John.

Alexander and Mary lived on at 119 10th St until they moved along the street to 123 in 1929. John worked as a builder and carpenter until his later years, when he was a salesman at Saskatoon Hardware at 144-150 2nd Ave S.

Alexander’s wife Mary died on 29 February 1964 and Alexander died on 26 May 1965. Leslie’s name is included on a joint tombstone in Woodlawn Cemetery.
