FREDERICK E HAZELL
Frederick E Hazell was born on 3 November 1867 in Roundstone, County Galway, Ireland to Samuel Hazell and Mary Hill. We have not been able to trace any further information about Fred in Ireland.
Fred immigrated to Canada aboard SS 'Oregon' arriving in Quebec on 24 May 1885. He was described as a labourer. In 1891, he was working as a farm labourer in South Norfolk, Manitoba.
Fred married Flora Ann Cummings in South Norfolk on 20 November 1900, her twenty-ninth birthday. Flora was born on 20 November 1871 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba to Charles Cummings (1846-1906) and Frances (Fanny) Corrigall (1848-1925). Flora had five siblings, Curtis James (b 1874), Isabelle (1875-1877), Rodrick George (b 1876), Walter John (b 1878) and Sarah Gertrude (b 1881). She grew up in Portage La Prairie, but had moved with her family to South Norfolk by 1891.
Fred and Flora remained in South Norfolk and by 1901, Fred appears in the census records as a farmer. Fred and Flora had three children. Their first child born in 1901 did not live; Ethleen was born on 29 May 1904 in Victoria, Manitoba and Charles Alfred George was born on 1 October 1911 in Hanley, Saskatchewan.
Fred enlisted in the CEF on 13 March 1916 when they were still living on the farm in Hanley. He joined the 65th Battalion, later the Saskatchewan Infantry. He does not seem to have served abroad as in 1917 and 1918 he is recorded in the Henderson directory for Saskatoon as a clerk at the Court House.
The family moved to Willoughby-Sumner Block 256 3rd Ave S in 1918. Following the war, Fred worked for the Soldiers’ Settlement Board in Saskatoon.
Fred and Flora retired to Vancouver about 1935 and were living at 532 E Broadway in that year. Fred died on 3 October 1954 and Flora died in 31 October 1961, both in British Columbia.
Ethleen may have become a teacher as there is a record of an Ethleen Hazell, teacher living at 122 Park St, Westmoreland, New Brunswick in 1945.
Charles, as a boy scout aged 17 years, travelled to the 3rd World Jamboree in Arrowe Park, Birkenhead, Liverpool, England. The Canadian contingent sailed from Montreal at the end of July 1929 and returned a month later. Charles married Hilda Larsen (1913-1990). They lived in British Columbia where Charles worked for BC Hydro. Charles died on 18 October 1991.
