GEORGE W HEWIT(T)

George W Hewitt was born on 18 July 1883 in Ontario to Moses Compton/Kempton Hewitt (1855-1933) and Mary Elizabeth McKinlay (1864-1892). George had 4 siblings, John J (b 1881), Maggie (b 1886), Elizabeth A (1889-1923) and William (b 1890). Following Mary Elizabeth’s death, Moses married for a second time; to Margaret Martineau/Martin (1868-1902). Moses and Margaret had a further four children, Della M (b 1894), Ernest Peter Kempton (b 1896), Benjamine William Alexander (b 1900) and Walter (1902-1924).

George grew up in Tay, Simcoe, Ontario. This is probably where he was born but we have been unable to find a birth record. In 1901, George is living with his parents and siblings and is listed as a lumber labourer. In 1906, George is working as a hired hand on the farm of James John Sproule in Souris Manitoba. JJ Sproule’s brother Nassau Charles Sproule was a signer on the quilt.

In 1916, George was farming in Perdue, about 40km west of Saskatoon.

No further information has been found for George.
