ETHEL HILL
Ethel May Maxwell was born on 30 September 1877 in Etobicoke Township, York, Ontario to Joseph Maxwell (b 1849) and Alison Elise Aldcorn (b 1849). Ethel had five brothers, Ernest William (b 1875), Frederick (b 1881), William (b 1884), Leonard (b 1886) and Howard (b 1889). Ethel grew up in Vaughan, York, Ontario. She married James William Hill (1875-1848) on 27 December 1899 in Swinton Park, Grey, Ontario.
James was born in December 1875 in Port Hope, Ontario to John Vint Hill (1842-1913) and Sarah Miller (1842-1914). James had four siblings, Maria Nettie (b 1865), Mary Ann (b 1872), Sarah Elizabeth (b 1880) and John (b 1881). James and Ethel came west to Radisson, Saskatchewan by 1906. James and Ethel had five children, William Russell (1903-1995), Elsie (1906-1907), Lewis (b 1910), Leslie James (1913-1982) and Eric (1915-1916).
James farmed on SE 16-40-13-W3 near Mayfield in 1911 and then 41-12-W3 in 1916. Both are about 60km north-west of Saskatoon.
James and Ethel were living in Saskatoon in 1924/25 at 1151 Ave K North. James was a farmer and carrier for the Post Office.
James died in Saskatoon on 3 April 1948 and Ethel died on 29 April 1964. They both buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.

Ethel Cottrill was born on 12 December 1889 in Mossley, Lancashire, England to Edwin Cottrill (b 1861) and Elizabeth (b 1862). Ethel had a least one sibling, Harry Hulme (1898-1967).
Ethel was a printer’s book binder when she married Frank Hill (1889-1958) 23 October 1918 in Ashton Under Lyme, Lancashire, England. Frank was born in England, but had been in Canada since 1912 and had enlisted for WWI. He was recorded in Henderson’s 1917 & 1918 Directories for Saskatoon at 418 Ave S South but away on active service. After their marriage, Ethel came out Canada aboard SS 'Minnedosa' arriving in Quebec on 20 May 1919 before travelling onwards to Saskatoon. They lived at 418 Ave S South and later 323 Ave R. Frank worked for the Quaker Oats Co.
Frank and Ethel had two children, Frank Rolly and Kathleen.
Frank died on 25 May 1958 in Saskatoon and Ethel on 12 July 1972 also in Saskatoon.

There are two candidates for the Ethel Hill signature. The first one Ethel May Maxwell married James William Hill and lived in Mayfield, Sk. The second candidate Ethel Cottrill married Frank Hill and only arrived in Saskatchewan in 1919.
Neither of these candidates appear to be strong contenders.
