QUEENIE VICTORIA HILL

Queenie Victoria Hill was born on 30 May 1897 in London, Middlesex, Ontario to Robert Hill (1858-1929) and Emma Catherine Hill (1860-1913). Queenie had nine siblings, Ethel (b 1883), Lily Esther (Lillian) (1884-1960), John Sidney Victor (1886-1920), Helena Elizabeth (b 1889), Samuel William Richard (1891-1935), Frank Smith (b 1893), Gladys Ruth (1894-1959), Holden Robert James (1899-1943) and Valetta Edith (1903-1926).

Robert Sr farmed in the London area until he came to Saskatoon in 1913 when he first found work with the City Health Board. He was living at 234 Ave E North. The following year, several of his children were also working in Saskatoon and the family were all living together at 234 Ave E North. Queenie was working as a stenographer for Canada Land & Investment Co and then Great Western Furniture Co. In 1918 she was working for government phones and then from 1920 to 1928 she worked as a stenographer for Canadian Government Elevator.

It would seem that she married in 1929 as that is the first year she is recorded in the Henderson’s Directory with her married name. She married Henry Alexander (Harry) Nesbitt. Harry was born on 18 October 1886 in Newcastle-On-Tyne, England to William Nesbitt (b 1857) and Mary (b 1850). Harry had one sister, Catherine (b 1882).

Harry came to Canada aboard SS ‘Megantic’ sailing from Liverpool and arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 7 April 1912 with Saskatoon as his planned destination. He hoped to become a farmer, but he was working as a fireman at Fire Hall No 2 and ‘living above the shop’ in 1914. Following the outbreak of WWI, Harry enlisted on 17 June 1915 and was on active service until the end of hostilities.

He resumed working as a fireman until 1927 when he was a salesman for Eatons departmental store.

After their marriage Harry and Queenie lived at 415 25th St W and Queenie continued to work as a stenographer. She worked for GF Stephens, paint and varnish manufacturers from 1929 until 1933.

Harry and Queenie had one son William John.

In 1941 Harry and Queenie moved to British Columbia. They were living in 2893 Marine Dr, Coast-Capilano in 1949 and Harry was a merchant.

Queenie died sometime between 1962 and 1974. Harry died on 22 March 1974 in Saanich, Victoria, British Columbia.
