THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

REGINALD HINDSON and ANNIE HINDSON née RICHARDSON

Reginald Hindson was born on 7 September 1886 in Hull, Yorkshire, England to John Milner Hindson (1852-1917) and Sarah Ann Pinchon (1850-1898). Reg had three brothers, James Alfred (1873-1927), Herbert Pinchon (b 1879) and William Harold (1880-1946).

James Alfred was a master mariner who was regularly away at sea.

Herbert Pichon also seems to have gone to sea as there is a record of a Herbert Pinchon Hindson (b 1879) dying aboard SS ‘Loch Trool’ off Victoria, South Australia in 1897.

William Harold remained in Hull, married Henrietta Spence on 15 September 1910, had one son Roland (1912-1996), enlisted for WWI on 8 September 1914 but was discharged on 20 January 1915 as “not being likely to become an efficient soldier” and died in Hull in 1946.

Reg sailed from Liverpool on about 8 July 1913 aboard SS ‘Tunisian’ bound for Quebec intending to travel on to Regina, Saskatchewan to find work as a clerk. By mid 1916 he was living at 1037 Rae St, Regina, was married to Annie Richardson and was working as an accountant for Department of Telephones.

Annie Richardson was born on 18 February 1887 in Leeds, Yorkshire to John Gaythorpe Richardson (1843-1904) and Sarah Ann Mason (b 1853). Annie had three siblings, Walter (b 1878), Daniel (b 1879) and Ada (b 1886). Annie also had three half-siblings, Elizabeth G (b 1860), Wright (b 1865) and Emily (b 1867) born to John Gaythorpe Richardson’s first wife Mary Ann Womersley (1840-1870?).

Annie Richardson came to Canada aboard SS ‘Metagama’ from Liverpool arriving in St Johns, Newfoundland on 17 April 1916. The passenger records states that Annie was coming to Regina to marry and work as a clerk. It may be that Reg and Annie had met in England before he left for Canada in 1913. Alternatively Annie may have been a ‘mail order bride’.

Reg and Annie had two children, Kenneth Reginald (1917-1979) and Kathleen (b 1919). In 1918, the family moved to 833 Ave B North, Saskatoon and the following year to 413 Ave D South. Reg worked for Saskatchewan Phones as an collector and later accountant.

In 1921, they were living in Last Mountain, Saskatchewan and Reg still worked for for the phone company.

Reg died in 1932 in Regina and Annie died on 13 December 1933 in Victoria, British Columbia.
