MARY MELVINA (MAE) HOAD née HEALY

Mary Melvina (Mae) Healy was born on 10 July 1885 in Mara, Orillia, Simcoe, Ontario to Marcus Healy (1848-1938) and Mary Jane Duffy (1853-1939). Mae had nine siblings, William Joseph (1874-1877), John Marcus (1876-1948), Bridget Anne (1878-1890), Arthur Basil (1882-1938), Honora (Nora) (b 1886), Lucy Meade (1889-1912), Bridget Lila (1891-1976), Ann Jane (Annie) (1893-1938) and Jennie (b 1895). Mae grew up on the family farm until her marriage.

Mae married Frederick Castle Hoad on 15 November 1909 in Port Arthur, Thunder Bay, Ontario. Frederick was born on 4 February 1885 in Toronto, York, Ontario to Henry Hoad (1847-1922) and Elizabeth Alice (Eliza) Castle (1850-1907). Frederick had six siblings, William Henry (1872-1924), Ernest Allen (1973-1933), Kate Emily (b 1875).

After their marriage, Fred and Mae lived at 228 McVicar St, Port Arthur where Fred was a butcher in a butcher’s shop.

Fred and Mae had two children, Frederick Albert (b 1918) and Yvonne.

Fred and Mae came to Saskatoon in 1912 when Fred became manager of branch No 5 of R F Preston, meat purveyors. They lived at various addresses in Saskatoon; 313 20th St W, 227 Ave E North and latterly 114 31st St W for many years. Fred as a butcher at Central Meat Markets and from 1922, the proprietor. From 1916-1928, Fred was treasurer of Retailers Trust Co Ltd, 812 Canada Building on the corner of 21st St and 1st Ave S.

Fred and Mae moved to 6090 Cartier St, Vancouver, British Columbia when Fred retired from business. Fred Jr lived with them and studied at University of British Columbia.

Fred died on 3 November 1937 and Mae on 7 October 1948 both in British Columbia.
