THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

Ella Evangeline Hollett was born on 3 July 1886 in Great Burin, Burin, Newfoundland , Canada to Isaac Hollett (1838-1892) and Mary Ann Cheeseman (1846-1900). Ella had eight siblings, William Henry (1968-1946), Cyrus (b 1870), Martha Florence (1872-1953), Melinda Ray (1875-1894), Thomas Vigus (1877-1945), Minnie (1879-1894), Isaac Eli (1881-1899) and Mary Ann (unknown).

Ella grew up in Great Burin and left in 1917 aged thirty-one years to study at college in Toronto, Ontario. This travel record indicates that she was a Methodist. In 1918, a Miss Hollett appears on the 3rd Ave Methodist Church roll.

No census records have been found for Ella in Canada. The entries in the Henderson directory for Saskatoon 1916-1921 do include some for Hollett names but they do not appear to match anyone in Ella’s family.

On 11 December 1927, Ella married Joseph Yates in Los Angeles, California. Joseph was born on 24 November 1873 in Bluebell, Pennsylvania, USA to Joseph Edwin Yates (1835-1915) and Margaret Taylor (1837-1915). Ella and Joseph lived at 1511 Dunsmuir Ave, Los Angeles, California from at least 1930 to 1940. Ella worked as a sales lady during this time. She took US citizenship in 1939.

Ella died on 15 August 1948 and Joseph died on 29 April 1954, both in Los Angeles.
