Edith Patricia Hurley was born on 17 March 1897 in RM of Cornwallis, Manitoba to William J Hurley (1870-1936) and Elizabeth Isabelle Grant (1873-1959). Edith had three siblings, Frederick William (1900-1976), Cecil Gilbert (b 1903) and Agnes Ruth (1909-1991). Edith’s father was a farm labourer in Brandon, Manitoba until the family came to Saskatoon in 1911 when he worked as a warehouseman for Cockshut Plow Co.
The family lived at 1000 Eastlake Ave for a few years before moving to Temperance St, first at 809 and then 843 for many years.
Edith began working for Heintzman & Co as a clerk in 1918 but was manager of the record department at Collard & Collard by the time she was 24 years old. She remained with Collard & Collard until around 1930 when she was working as a nurse. She later worked as a saleslady until shortly before her marriage to Paul Gerhardt Schwager in about 1938.
Paul was born on 17 October 1886 in Norton, Winona, Minnesota to John Schwager (1849-1931) and Louise Wilhelmine Timm (1847-1931). Paul had four sisters, Alma (1877-1957), Hilda Emily (1882-1970), Etta (b 1891) and Hazel (b 1893). Paul’s first wife, Geraldine Hattie Hamilton (b 1889) died in 1931, the same year as his parents. He had three children by this union, Orpha Louise (1913-2003), Paul Gerhardt Jr (1915-1996) and John Hamilton (1923-1923). Paul Jr studied medicine at University of Saskatchewan and was awarded BSc and MD in 1936. During WWII, Paul served with Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve as a surgeon commander.
After their marriage, Edith and Paul lived at 839 University Drive and later 710 Saskatchewan Crescent East, Saskatoon.
Paul died on 17 December 1963 and Edith on 13 February 1971, both in Saskatoon.
