Patrick Watson Hutcheon (Paddy) was born on 25 Mar 1872 in Brechin, (Forfarshire) Angus, Scotland to David Milne Hutcheon (1837-1920) and Annie Park Low (1837-1900). Paddy had eight siblings, Lizzie (1862-1948), Alexander Charles (1864-1941), Marianne Jane (b 1865), David Milne (b 1867), Charles Low (1870-1947), George Low (1872-1953), Nellie W (b 1876-) and Stuart Forbes Low (1881-1934).
Paady’s father David, was a draper and most of his children learned this trade. Charles Low was apprenticed to a lawyer.
Paddy and Charles Low sailed on SS 'State of Nebraska' from Glasgow on 5 August 1892 to New York arriving on 16 August. Charles’ intention was to stay in America but Paddy was travelling on to Canada. This venture seems to have gone awry as Paddy returned to Scotland and married Jane Anne (Jeannie) Mitchell in about 1900 and Charles was farming in Saskatoon in 1901. Jeannie was born in 1880 in Lochee, Forfar, Scotland to James Mitchell (b 1848) and Mary Ann Flockhart (b 1846). Jeannie had four siblings, James (b 1866), David (1870), Archibald (b 1876) and Elizabeth (b 1979).
Paddy and Jeannie had one daughter, Vera Mary, born in Scotland in 1902.
Paddy returned to Canada on his own, aboard SS ’Pretorian’ and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 19 April 1903. Jeannie and Vera followed in 1906 on SS ‘Mongolian’ arriving in Halifax on 27 February. Jeannie’s mother, Mary Ann Mitchell, accompanied them. Paddy and Jeannie had a second child, David Milne (1907-1967) born in R.M. of St Francois Xavier, Manitoba.
According to homestead records Paddy, several of his brothers and his father were all homesteaders at various dates between 1903 and 1916. Charles Low staked the first claim on 19 May 1903 on NW-14-37-6-W3, then George Low staked a claim in the NE part of the same section on 8 July 1905. Their father staked on NW-12-37-6-W3 on 29 May 1909 and brother, Alexander Charles had two quarters at 18-35-17-W3 on 16 November 1912 and 4 July 1916.
Paddy enlisted in the CEF on 29 December 1914 in 5th Artillery Brigade. He was living at 875 Preston Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba and his occupation was wheelwright.
The family continued to live at 873 Preston Ave until at least 1921. In 1935, Paddy and Jeannie were living at 50 Purcell Ave, Winnipeg. Paddy died on 7 October 1945 in Winnipeg. No further information has been found for Jeannie.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Hutcheon Tree.
We are quite sceptical about this candidate; Paddy signed his enlistment papers ‘Patrick’, we have found no direct link to Saskatoon (though his father was living at 423 10th St, Saskatoon in 1918) and Paddy although a common nick-name for Patrick would more usually be applied to an Irishman not a Scot.
No other candidate has been found. Please contact us if you know of any other candidate for Paddy Hutcheon.
