THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

BALLENTINE/BARKER/KITCHEN/WOOD

Rosilla Dunphy was born in February 1834 in New Brunswick, Canada and married Joseph Moses Barker (b 1826) in 1853. She helpfully included her age with her signature, so we can be sure that the quilt was being made during 1918.

Rosilla & Joseph had two sons, Thomas Oscar & Manzer and six daughters, Emma, Rosie, Julia Ann, Ann, Gertrude & Lilley.

Thomas Wesley Kitchen was born on 27 April 1852 in Kingsclear, York County, New Brunswick, Canada and married Abigail F Kenny (b 1861 in Nova Scotia) on 12 December 1878. They had three children, Laura Mabel (b 21 December 1879 in Prince William, York County, NB), Clara May (b 31 July 1881 in Prince William, York County, NB) and Alfred Hartley (b 26 July 1887 in Prince William, York County, NB).

Abigail died in 1889 aged 28.

Thomas Wesley subsequently married Julia Ann Nason (née Barker) a widow, born on 29 June 1854 in New Brunswick.

After Joseph Barker’s death in 1896, the family came west, arriving in Saskatoon by 1916.

Clara May Kitchen married Oscar H Ballantine/Ballentine (b 24 February 1878 in York County, New Brunswick) on 25 June 1902 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. However they were back in New Bruswick in 1911 but by 1912 were in Saskatoon at 1010 Aird St. Oscar was working as a carpenter.

By 1915 Oscar had become deputy sheriff and they were living at 627 25 th St E. In 1918 they were living at #107 Drinkle Building 3, 115 3rd Ave S and Oscar was again listed as a carpenter. By the 1920’s they were in Vancouver where Oscar’s brother was living and then they moved to Massachusetts, USA where they remained until Oscar’s death in 1957 aged 79. Subsequently Clara returned to Fredericton, New Bruswick where she died aged 82 in 1963.

Clara’s sister Laura Mabel married Fenton Evelyn Wood (b on 4 June 1879 in Prince Edward Island, Canada) on 23 July 1902 on Prince Edward Island. They had two daughters, Mary and Clara. Leaving New Brunswick they settled in Saskatoon. In 1916 they were living at 1012 Aird St and Fenton was a carpenter. Perhaps the brothers-in-law were in business together. Later they moved back to New Brunswick where Fenton died aged 85 and Laura Mabel died in 1968 aged 89.

Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Ballentine/Barker/Kitchen/Wood Tree.
