HORACE ORLANDO JONES and ELSIE IRENE JONES

Horace Orlando Jones was born in February 1875 in Westbury on Severn, Gloucestershire, England to George Jones (1845-1922) and Annie Workman (1849-1897). Horace had six siblings, Wilson George (1872-1945), Arnold Workman (1873-1954), Wilfred Lawson (b 1877), George Frederick (b 1879), Annie Elizabeth (1880-1881) and Hedley Vicker (1884-1930). George Jones Sr was a grocer in East Dean, Gloucestershire, England. As the children grew up they helped in the family business.

After George’s wife died in 1897, George remarried in 1898 to Mary Ann (Annie) Smith (b 1876).

Horace and Wilfred came out to Canada on SS ‘Dominion‘ sailing from Liverpool on about 8 December 1899 and arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 18 December. They were headed for Toronto.

Horace married Sarah Anne Booth on 30 July 1903 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Sarah was born in January 1876 in Walmersley, Lancashire, England to William Booth (1847-1912) and Elizabeth Ann Warburton (1947-1890). Sarah had four siblings, James Henry (b 1872), Nellie (b 1881), William F (1883-1971) and Elizabeth (b 1886). William Booth Sr was a loom overlocker in the cotton trade in Lancashire. Sarah was a weaver in the cotton trade. It is believed that Sarah immigrated to Canada aboard SS ‘Dominion’ arriving Montreal on 24 July 1903.

Horace and Wilfred established their general merchandise business very soon after they arrived in Saskatoon in 1905. By 1908, Jones Brothers was a large store at 248 1st Ave and they had an advertisement in the Henderson Directory for that year. The business prospered and by 1914 they were employing about twenty staff. It seems that Wilfred was less settled than Horace. In 1915, Wilfred was lodging at 132 Broadway, New York and was a real estate broker.

Horace and Sarah had five children, George Harold Booth (1904-1970), Jane (1905-1911), Elsie “Irene” Booth (1906-1978), Clarence Workman (1908-1987) and Cyril (b 1914). The family house was at 616 McPherson Avenue, Saskatoon.

Horace work for Government Phones from 1926 until his retirement in 1946. Horace married Anne Potts (1898-1982) on 17 March 1936 in Saskatoon. Horace died on 14 June 1968 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.

Irene married Frederick John Rosser Spark. Frederick was born on 18 September 1897 in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England to Frederick Spark (1870-1962) and Anne Elizabeth Rosser (1870-1907). Frederick had seven siblings, Ethel Ann (1898-1898), Margaret Elizabeth (1898-1979), Alfred Edward (1899-1975), Annie (b 1901), Norman (1903-1982), Dorothy (b 1905) and Leonard (1906-1939). Frederick immigrated to Canada in about 1913 with his family. In 1914 they were living on Grant St, Saskatoon and Frederick was a fitter with CPR. Frederick and Irene lived on 13th St for many years and when Frederick retired they moved to British Columbia.

Frederick died on 1 May 1978 in British Columbia. No record has been found for Irene’s death.

A tree on Ancestry has been created for this family under the title 3rd Ave Jones Tree.
