THE GRANT FAMILY

Peter Grant (1831-1899) left his home in Inverness, Scotland in 1852 and came to Canada, arriving in Culross in 1854. He claimed Lots 21 & 22 on Concession 10 and obtained the Crown Deed in 1869.

Peter married Bridget Howatt (1931-1907) on 20 December 1858 in Huron County.

Peter and Bridget had ten children,

John (1861-1924),
Margaret Jane (1862-1885),
Robert (1862-1940),
Elizabeth (1864-1941),
Donald Alexander (1868-1914),
Peter (1869-1926),
James S (1871-1948),
Thomas (1873-1909),
Duncan (1875-1958) and
David Martin (1878-1967).

John was born on 29 May 1861 in Culross but later established himself in Simcoe County. He married Florence Emma McCoy around 1890. Florence was born on 8 July 1870. We have been unable to identify her parents.

John and Florence had five children,

Peter (b 1891),
Elizabeth Jane (1893-1973),
Elsie May (1897-1960),
Howard John Niddrie (b 1909) and
Mervin.

John died on 24 April 1924 in New Lowell, Simcoe County. We have been unable to find when Florence died.

Robert was born on 3 December 1862 in Culross. He married Priscilla Rosella Smith on 22 August 1893 in Teeswater. Priscilla was born on 25 December 1866 in Culross to William James Smith (1830-1904) and Elizabeth Geddes (1835-1903). Priscilla had nine siblings, Eliza Ann (1855-1858), Joseph (1857-1858), Eleanor (1859-1923), Ann Jane (1861-1884), Eliza Matilda (1863-1933), Emma (1869-1945), Robert (1871-1953), William (1871-1963) and Edith (1874-1902).

Robert and Priscilla had four children,

Alexander William (1894-1958),
Peter (1896-1956),
Clair Malcolm (1907-2000) and
Nora Grant.

Peter was born on 22 July 1896 in Culross. He married Jessie Maud Holmes on 22 October 1930 in Wingham, Huron, Ontario. Jessie was born on 30 September 1897 in Turnberry Twp, Huron to David Holmes (1864-1952) and Hannah Godkin (1872-1955). Jessie had three brothers, David H (1900-1939), Henry (b 1902) and James Oscar (1904-1969).

Peter farmed in Culross. He died on 17 April 1956 and Jessie died on 29 June 1955.

Clair Malcolm was born on 22 January 1907 in Bruce. He married Catherine Eva McInnes on 25 August 1933 in Wingham, Huron, Ontario. Catherine was born on 12 July 1910 in Bruce, Ontario to Joseph Alexander McInnes (1879-1955) and Emily (Emma) Gordon (1885-1949). Catherine had eight siblings, Gordon Alexander (1905-1985), Margaret Ellen (1905-1970), Mary (1908-1980), Emma Elizabeth (1913-1983), Emily Elizabeth (1913-1983), Bessie (1915-2008), Joseph Almer (1918-1997) and Evelyn Marie (1921-1992).

Clair farmed in Formosa, Bruce. Catherine died on 17 December 1996 in Wingham, Ontario. Clair died on 3 August 2000 also in Wingham.

Nothing further is known of Norma.

Robert died on 8 March 1940 and Priscilla died on 20 November 1942, both on Teeswater.

Donald was born on 14 April 1868 in Culross. He married Margaret Elizabeth McNaughton on 28 December 1904 in Culross. Margaret was born on 6 January 1876 in Culross to Peter McNaughton (1841-1922) and Elizabeth McAllister (1847-1939). Margaret had four siblings, Hugh Henry (1877-1955), Mary (1878-1966), Eliza Jessie (1879-1963) and Jean (Janet) Creighton (1881-1970).

Donald and Margaret had two sons,

Peter McNaughton (Mac) (1905-1989) and
Donald Alexander (b 1909).

Peter was born on 13 November 1905 in Culross. Peter was a school teacher. He married Dorothy Jones (1904-1984) also a teacher in about 1934. Peter died on 5 February 1898 in Teeswater.

Donald was born on 13 August 1909 in Culross. He was also a school teacher. He married Jean McIntyre. Nothing further is known of Jean, though she may have had a sister, Mary G McIntyre.

Donald Sr died of pneumonia on 19 February 1914 in Culross. Margaret died on 19 August 1958 in Wingham, Bruce County.

Peter was born on 11 May 1869 in Culross. He married Annie Donaldson on 13 June 1904 in Teeswater. Annie was born on 6 June 1873 in Teeswater to Robert Donaldson (1832-1912) and Isabella Anderson (1831-1902). Annie had six siblings, James (1854-1926), David (1856-1925), Alexander (1860-1877), Thomas (1862-1939), Margaret (1865-1951) and John (1867-1936).

Peter and Annie had two daughters,

Isabel Velma (1905-1967) and
Jannet Margretta (1909-1961).

Isabel married John McMaster Moffat (1897-1984) on 20 October 1926 in Teeswater. They had one daughter, Grace Janette (1931-1996). Isabel died on 10 May 1967 in Teeswater.

Jannet did not marry and died in 1961.

Peter died on 27 May 1926 in Wingham, Huron County. Annie died on 1 April 1963 in Teeswater.

James was born in April 1871 and trained as a veterinary surgeon; the following describes his life:

After graduating from Toronto Veterinary College in 1895, Dr. Grant practised in Bervie, where he met and married Mary Campbell. An American classmate persuaded the couple to move to Portland, Michigan, where he practised for nine years. During this time their daughter Elsie and son Gordon were born. On returning to Culross, they built a new home on the tenth Concession, Lot 21, across the road from the [Peter Grant] homestead. It was from here that Dr. Grant carried on his profession.

After the marriage of his son to Myrtle Dustow, Dr. Grant, his wife and daughter bought a home in Teeswater where he continued to practise. Mrs Grant died in November, 1942, and on November 23, 1948, Dr. Grant passed away.Thus fifty-two years of veterinary service in the community came to a close. Dr. Grant’s family is still represented in the farming community through his only grandson, Jim, his wife Phyllis and their three children, Shawn, Michael and Lisa.

James married Mary (Minnie) Campbell on 24 December 1897 in Ionia, Michigan. Minnie was born on in January 1869 in probably in New Brunswick but her family moved to Michigan, USA the following year and that is where she grew up. After their marriage, James and Minnie lived in Portland, Ionia, Michigan but by 1911 they had returned to Culross where James is described as both farmer and veterinary surgeon.

Minnie died in 1942 and James died in 1948. They are both buried in Teeswater Cemetery.

Duncan was born on 13 May 1875 in Culross. He married Kate Jennet Violet Maude Semple in Teeswater on 10 June 1913. Kate was born on 17 November 1869 in Wellington, Ontario to James Semple (1841-1920) and Elizabeth Rae (1847-1910).

Duncan farmed on Lot 20, Concession 11 in Culross. He and Kate had no children. Kate died in 1945 and Duncan died in 1958. They are both buried in Teeswater Cemetery.

David was born on 26 August 1878 in Culross. He married Elizabeth Catherine (Bessie) McKenzie in Teeswater on 24 September 1913. Bessie was born on 15 January 1878 in Culross to Alexander McKenzie (1835-1904) and Elizabeth (Betsy) McRae (1842-1911). Bessie had three siblings, Anabella (1867-1934), Donald (1874-1938) and William (1887-1950).

David and Bessie had three children,

Florence Elizabeth (1914-2007),
Kenneth D (1916-2003) and
Donald M (1919-1972).

Florence was born on 5 July 1914 in Culross. She went on to be a hairdresser in Teeswater and died there on 10 December 2007. She is buried in Teeswater Cemetery.

Kenneth was born on 15 September 1916 and farmed in Formosa, Bruce County. He married Wilma Sothern Wilson of Fordwich. Wilma was born on 3 July 1917 in Howick, Huron to David Wilson (1869-1917) and Mary Charlotte E Sothern (1875-1950). Wilma had five siblings, William Alexander Richard (1902-1985), Myrna Olive (1905-1906), John Carl (1908-2000), Jean Edna Matilda (1910-1993) andCecil David (1912-1985).

Kenneth and Wilma had three children, David, Alan and Catherine. Wilma died on 13 July 1996 and Kenneth died on his birthday in 2003. They both buried in Teeswater Cemetery.

David farmed in Culross and after Bessie died in 1921, he married Emma McRae on 7 June 1923 at Salem Parsonage, Culross. Emma died on 10 October 1966 and David died on 7 April 1967. They are both buried in Teeswater Cemetery.
