James Semple was born on 18 November 1841 in Upper Canada to Hugh Semple (1811-1882) and Janet Mackie (1811-1897). James had eight siblings, Andrew (1837-1916), Margaret (1839-1866), Ann (1844-1920), Hugh (1847-1917), John (1850-1933), Robert (1851-1921), Alexander William (1854-1888) and Janet (1855-1923). James married Elizabeth Rae on 19 January 1869 in Eramosa Twp, Wellington County. Elizabeth was born on 12 October 1847 in Eramosa Twp to John Rae (1796-1854) and Catherine Forrester (1815-1874).
James and Elizabeth had ten children,
Kate Jennet Violet Maude (1869-1945),
William (1871-1936),
Ida Addie (1873-1964),
Hugh Rankin (1874-1944),
Eliza Ellen (1877-1916),
Andrew E. (1879-1881),
Grace Emma (1882-1971),
Mary (Maimie) A (1884-1936),
Christine 'Chrissie' (1886-1910) and
Jean Agnes (b 1889).
James farmed in East Garafraxa, Wellington County until around 1910 when he moved to Culross.
Kate married Duncan Grant in Teeswater on 10 June 1913. Duncan was born on 13 May 1875 in Culross to Peter Grant (1831-1899) and Bridget Howatt (1831-1907). Kate and Duncan had no children.
Kate died in 1945 and Duncan died in 1958. They are both buried in the Teeswater Cemetery. See the Grant page for the story of Duncan’s family.
Hugh was born on 31 October 1874 in East Garafraxa. He farmed with his father and never married. Hugh died on 23 September 1944 in Teeswater.
Maime was born on 15 January 1884 in East Garafraxa. She kept house for her father after his wife died and then for her brother, Hugh. She died in Teeswater on 11 July 1936 following a bout of influenza. She is buried in Teeswater Cemetery.
