THACKER FAMILY

Bertram Switzer Thacker was born on 20 September 1900 in Bruce County, Ontario to Albert Edward Thacker (1870-1917) and Mary Alice Bentley Switzer (1874-1932).

Bertram had five siblings, Ada Dymond (1902-1989), Alvin Albert (1905-1973), Alexander Webster (1905-1965), Maybelle Mary (1907-1949) and Ethel Margaret (1915-1917).

It seems that Bertram lived his entire life in Culross Twp as he appeared there in all available census records and also died there. He married Viola Barbour on 3 September 1938. She was born on 12 August 1906 in Wellington, Ontario to Robert Barbour (1862-1931) and Emma Jane Barbour (1869-1913). Her siblings were: Robert Arnold (1895-1973), Mary Elizabeth (1897-1964) and Clarence T (1903-1976). Bertram and Viola had three children:

Donald Switzer,
Mary Joan and
Barbara June.

Bertram died in Bruce County on 9 June 1990 and Viola died in 1985.  Both are buried in Smith's Cemetery in Bruce County.

Ada was born on 13 August 1902 in Culross Twp.  She was a member of The Junior Workers of the Queen Mary's Needlework Guild who made the Culross quilt in about 1918.  She was living in Culross Twp until at least the time of the 1921 census. She died on 2 July 1989 and the inscription for her death is on the same tombstone as that of her sister, Ethel, in Smith's Cemetery. It would appear that she never married.

Alvin was born on 11 September 1905 in Culross Twp. He married Mary "Kathleen" Fisk on 30 June 1931 in Salem, Ontario. Kathleen was born on 9 June 1911 in Greenock Twp, Bruce County to James Fisk (1872-1938) and Sarah McConkey (1870-1961). Her siblings were: John Alvin (1898-1959), James Arthur Baldwin (1901-1990), Elizabeth "Olive" (1903-1992), Winnifred Mabel (1905-1959) and Sarah "Eileen" (1908-1983).

James Arthur Baldwin Fisk and Winnifred Mabel Fisk married siblings Gladys Mabel Bell and David Edwin Bell respectively whose mother Mrs E Bell appears on the quilt. See here.

Sarah “Eileen” Fisk married William “Russell” Baptist who appears on the quilt. See here.

Kathleen and Alvin had five children:

Joan Sarah (1944-1944),
Richard,
Robert,
Hugh and
Gwen.

Alvin died on 21 January 1973 and Kathleen, in Teeswater, in 1992.  Both are buried in Smith's Cemetery.

Alexander was born on 11 September 1905 in Culross Twp. He married Elizabeth "Olive" Fisk who was a sister of Alvin's wife. It is interesting to note that Alvin and Alexander were twins and that they married sisters. Alexander was an upholsterer and was living in Detroit Michigan by 1925. He married Olive some time after 1930 as he was still single at the time of the 1930 USA census. The marriage may have occurred in 1933 as there is a border crossing record for Alexander and Olive on 8 August 1933. Both Olive and Alexander died in Livonia, Michigan, Alexander on 27 February 1965 and Olive on 1 March 1992.

This family can be found on Ancestry under the title Culross Thacker Tree.
