James Marks Smyth (1823-1890) came to Canada from his home in Ireland in about 1852. James married Elizabeth Fogarty (1828-1916) on 18 July 1856 probably in Culross, Bruce County. It is likely that James received the Crown Deed on Concession 12 Lot 14 (100 acres) on 2 May 1867 and in a further two allocations he took Concession 12 Lot 13 west (50 acres) and east (50 acres) on 25 March 1869 and 15 February 1882 respectively.
James and Elizabeth had five children,
William James (1857-1942),
Wesley Armitage (1859-1922),
Mary Elizabeth (1860-1933),
Albert Israel (1863-1931) and
Annie Eleanor (1868-1940).
William was born on 11 October 1857 in Culross. William worked on the family farm as a labourer in 1881. William married Avis Ann Sillick on 18 September 1889 in Culross. Avis was born on 5 May 1864 in Culross to John Sillick (1836-1914) and Ann Newman (1840-1901). Avis had five siblings, Mary Jane (1863-1943), William (1866-1942), John Abraham (1869-1922), Sarah Amelia (b 1874) and Joseph Newman (1878-1965).
William farmed in Culross; he and Avis had three children
William Everett (1890-1924),
Harold Bruce (1892-1977) and
John Stewart (1895-1977).
Harold also farmed in Culross; he married Elsie “Pearl” Huffman on 2 July 1919 in Teeswater. Pearl was born on 31 August 1896 in Culross to Henry H Huffman (1862-1938) and Martha Jane Bradford (1866-1941). Harold and Pearl had two daughters, Twyla and Lorna. Harold died on 20 January 1977 and Pearl died on 19 March 1979.
John farmed in Formosa, Bruce County. He enlisted in the CEF on 28 May 1918 in Toronto. John married Agnes Hughes on 29 March 1922 in Teeswater. Agnes was born on 17 December 1901 in Culross to Albert Hughes (1870-1942) and Jane Richardson (1873-1958). Agnes had seven siblings, Mary Ann (1894-1980), Annie (1896-1896), Thomas (1899-1970), Gladys Elizabeth (1905-1988), Walter Cecil Sam (1909-1975), Joseph Omar Dude (1910-1976) and Alice (1915-1984). John and Agnes had one son, Ronald Hughes. John died in 1977 and Agnes died in 1986.
William died on 1 April 1942 and Avis died on 27 November 1957. They both buried in the Culross-Teeswater Cemetery.
Wesley Armitage was born on 6 June 1859 in Culross. He farmed in Culross and married Clara Standish there on 23 December 1892. Clara was born on 27 August 1865 in Culross to Francis Standish (1819-1898) and Clarinda Reed (1827-1900). Clara had eight siblings, Mary (1846-1846), Robert (1848-1909), John (1850-1914), Francis (1853-1880), Thomas Harborn (1855-1936), Sarah Ann (1858-1858), Mary Eleanor (1862-1905) and Joseph (1868-1879).
Wesley farmed in Culross; he and Clara had four children,
Warden Edmund (1894-1975),
Georgina Athewell (Ethel) (1895-1909),
Warner Armitage (1899-1982) and
Francis William (1901-1903).
Warner farmed in Culross; he married Lillie Olive McQuaid on 12 November 1917 in Goderich, Huron County. Lillie was born on 20 April 1904 in Ashfield, Huron County to Albert J S McQuaid (1869-1966) and Caroline Jane Mallough (1878-1925). Lillie had four siblings, Mabel Irene (1902-1965), Luetta Pearl (Etta) (1907-1961), Ruby Elizabeth (1908-1987) and Freda (1919-1999). Warner died in 1982 and Lillie died in 1988.
Wesley died on 1 January 1922 and Clara died on 1 August 1947.
